That time when we became Australia’s First Denim B Corp

We have never believed that your school grades equate to how you do at life, but when you roll in the realm of ethical and sustainable fashion, it’s important that you don’t fake your CV. A brand might say it’s all for the people and the planet, but is it really?

Enter B CorpTM.

Outland Denim is Australia’s first denim label to become a Certified B Corporation, and the second globally.

We are chuffed, to say the least. But what does it mean?

Certified B Corporations are social enterprises verified by B Lab, a nonprofit organization. The B CorpTM certification is globally recognised, with 60 countries, 2,595 companies and 150 industries under the B Corporation umbrella.

The certification aims to create a community of brands that meet the highest standards of overall social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability, and aspire to use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems.

To obtain B Corporation status, a company or brand must complete a comprehensive questionnaire, including substantiating evidence, followed up with a detailed interview and subsequent reviews with stringent guidelines.

The process requires a significant commitment of time and resources for both the company concerned and B CorpTM but the result is mutually beneficial - an honest and true picture of the company is presented while adding to B Corp's vision of a global movement of people using business as a force for good.

Unlike traditional corporations, Certified B Corporations are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on all stakeholders, must achieve a minimum verified score on a B Impact Assessment, and are required to recertify every two years against evolving standards.

“Environmental impact and social impact go hand in hand, so we dig deep into our supply chain and question each supplier on their social and environmental standards,” says Outland’s Social and Environmental Impact Manager Leisl Lancaster.

“Solving social issues that break the cycle of poverty directly alters the wider communities in which we work,” she says.

“By providing opportunity, education, living wages and training, our overall community score was over three times higher than the median score of businesses that have completed the B Impact Assessment.”

For people who want to work for, buy from, and invest in businesses they believe in, B Corp has fast become a near universal signpost. Other fashion brands in the “B Economy” include Patagonia, Apolis, Nisolo, KOTN, Accompany, Etiko and Eileen Fisher.

“It is so important that there is an independent body who can evaluate and attest those companies who are making a positive impact on the world,” adds Outland Partnerships Manager Sally Townsend, who led the charge in the process of securing Outland’s B CorpTM certification.

“It can be difficult for consumers to know which companies they can trust - the B CorpTM stamp makes this very easy.”
